Born in 1975 in the city of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. His artistic career began at a very young age. As a teenager, he moved to Mexico City, where he started working with his older brother Batz, a visual artist and and craftsman Joel became his apprentice and student a few years .
In August 2002, Batz began studying in California, starting his career at Los Angeles City College, Valley College, and LA Pier College, where he was trained by professors in the visual arts. In June 2007, he earned his Associate Arts Degree fallowed by a second degree in music education 2008 (A Degree in Music Education).
After of his artistic training and exhibiting, he transferred to UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) to further his higher education.
Joel Batz returned to Guatemala in December 2010 due to the tragic passing of his mother. He decided to settle in La Antigua Guatemala, where he exhibited his artwork on the street of the Arch. In 2012, he opened his own studio, “Galería del Color,” along with his other older brother Marcos Batz. This marked a new beginning full of inspiration and motivation. Sharing experiences and techniques, they began a new chapter as art exhibitors, promoting education and artistic talent through art therapy programs, group classes for underprivileged children, adult art workshops, and exhibitions of emerging artists, among others.
In September 2014, Casa Para Las Artes (CPA) project was launched. Joel Batz, as co-founder, aimed to support the emergence of new talent by creating spaces for artistic and cultural development. Batz exhibits and teaches at CPA, where his inspiration and unique style began to flourish, deeply influenced by Guatemalan culture.
Today, Batz enjoys a new era in the arts, projecting his talent and style—above all, channeling the inspiration he has drawn from different cultures. His greatest inspiration is life itself, influenced by everything that moves and breathes life. A realist and magical realism artist, he captures in every brushstroke a deep sense of identity.
